Over the years, the Kenyan government has been making major milestones in the education sector. For instance, a few years ago, it changed its education system from 8-4-4 to 2-6-6-3. The new curriculum ensures learners get the best Pre-Primary education (PP1 and PP2) to prepare them for other levels adequately. Therefore, knowing what PP1 entails may help you to prepare as a Pre-Primary teacher or parent.

Overall, PP1 covers essential learning areas to prepare learners for the ever-changing societal needs. More emphasis is put on the early education stages because they serve as the foundation. As a result, the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) design has availed everything needed to make the system a success.

What Does PP1 Mean?

PP1 is a short form for Pre-Primary One. It is classified under Early Years Education in the Basic Education Curriculum Framework (BECF). PP1 learning is, precisely, offered to kids aged four years.

According to CBC, kids are supposed to spend one year in PP1. By the end of the period, kids should acquire important knowledge in seven learning areas – mathematical, literacy, religious education, environmental, music, psychomotor, and creative areas.

PP1 Schemes Of Work

Generally, a scheme of work is an outline or long-term teaching plan of a particular subject. Every teacher understands the importance of schemes of work. In most instances, most teachers prepare the schemes of work at the beginning of a term.

PP1 schemes of work are currently available for download online. They are keenly drafted to guide teachers to deliver in their mandate.

PP1 Syllabus

Unlike the previous education systems, the new curriculum is student-based. Its primary objective is to help learners to acquire relevant skills they can use in real-life situations. As a result, the syllabus is carefully designed to addresses various essential core competencies and values as stipulated in the BECF.

The PP1 syllabus covers seven important subjects. Below is a summary of what each subject entails:

Creative Arts Activities

This is one of the essential subjects offered to young learners in the Early Years of the Education stage. Some of the lessons covered here include drawing, scribbling, doodling, painting, dotting, picture-making techniques, modelling, papercraft, colouring, printing, patternmaking, construction, ornaments, and creating shapes and forms.

By the end of the syllabus, kids should learn important values such as peace, unity, respect, cooperation, sharing, and love. Similarly, some of the core competencies acquired by learners at the end of the syllabus include digital literacy, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration.

Religious Education Activities

Religious Education is another important subject offered to Pre-Primary One learners. Considering the age of learners at this age, they must cover three topics only – God’s creation, Christian values, and places of worship. By the end of the syllabus, learners should know God (Their creator), mention their name, pray, recite a bible verse, and sing a song about God.

Literacy Activities

Another subject available in the Pre-Primary One syllabus is language activities. Important areas covered in the subject include speaking, reading, writing, listening. Every PP1 teacher should strive to cover the syllabus before learners advance to PP2.

By the end of the three terms, learners should be familiar with common greetings and farewell, active listening, passing information, recognize letters and sounds. They should also be able to handle a book properly and have improved visual memory.

Environmental Studies

Environmental studies help learners to appreciate their surroundings and bodies. In term one, the syllabus is broken down into 12 lessons. By the end of term one, a learner should tell their identities and those around them, identify their gender, show etiquette, clean their nose, know the importance of dressing, among many others.

The syllabus covers important environmental aspects such as health practices, school, weather, and natural environment (Plants and Animals). Other sub-strands available in the topics include water, sound smell, light, soil, and care. Critical thinking, collaboration, and communication are the main core competencies of the subject.

Mathematics

Like languages, mathematics is another crucial subject offered to PP1 learners. In term one, learners are introduced to classification (sorting, grouping, matching, pairing, ordering, patterns, number recognition, and counting).

In term two, teachers introduce learners to number and measurements. By the end of the term, a learner should be conversant with various sub-strands such as counting concrete objects, numbering consequences, number writing, number puzzle, sides of objects and mass.

Considering term three is usually short, teachers must continue teaching the learners more about measurements. Some of the measurement aspects to cover include mass (heavy and light objects), capacity, time, and area (surface of objects).

Psychomotor Activities

The subject is designed to help learners develop gross and fine motor skills. It also helps learners to develop their talents and appreciate the diversity of their rich African cultures.

In terms one and two, teachers should introduce kids to basic motor skills and fun games – locomotive/no-locomotive, manipulative skills, and traditional games. In term three, teachers should focus on swimming alone. Here, they must teach kids about pool safety hygiene and water orientation.

Music

Music is the seventh subject offered to learners under the CBC. Areas covered in the subject include listening and responding performance and musical rhythm. By the end of the syllabus, kids should imitate sounds, creating and composing/reciting rhythmic patterns.

NOTE: Teachers should conduct each lesson in 30 minutes. Also, some lessons should be conducted outside the traditional classroom.

Learning Materials

Teachers and parents can find the approved PP1 learning materials on the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) website. The site outlines all the approved course materials to be used by students and teachers. Some of the books listed on the website, for instance, can be found in most bookstores across the country. Notably, PP1 assignments are available at the end of each lesson to assess learners’ understanding.

Similarly, you can find PP1 revision papers online and in other approved bookstores across the country. However, there are many online dealers selling revision materials. As a result, some may not be legit. Thus, it is crucial to be careful when buying some of the learning materials online.
