Largest Utility Company In The USA By Revenue

There’s a little controversy going on at the moment concerning which utility company is the largest in the US. For the most part, ExxonMobil is considered the largest energy company in the US by revenue because of its estimated revenue in the second quarter of the year 2022. Situated in Texas, ExxonMobil in it’s 2020 fiscal year generated $179.8 billion as revenue. However, Exelon Corporation which ranked seventh soared to the first position as the largest gas and electric utility company in the US based on revenues in 2021. So, let’s take the statistics together.

What Do Utility Do?

Utility is classified into electric, water, gas or those that produce gas. It is responsible for the maintenance of the public service’s infrastructures such as electricity, water etc. Utilities are usually regulated by public entities which may include local community groups, statewide government monopolies or private bodies.

Revenue is the amount of money a company receives or earns from it’s customers in exchange for the sales and supplies of goods and services. For the labour market and utilities, revenue is the income statement from which proceeds the net income after the necessary subtractions of cost and expense are made.

Who is the Largest Utility Company In The USA By Revenue?

Exelon which generated approximately 36.3 billion U.S. dollars in FY 2021 was regarded as the largest gas and electric utility in the United States, based on revenues in 2021. Exelon’s revenue for the first quarter ending was estimated at $4.239B, a 5.45% increase year-over-year on June 30th 2022 while the revenue for the twelve months ending June 30, 2022 was $37.261B, a 45.43% increase.

Exelon is undoubtedly the largest utility company in the US by revenue with ComEd, PECO, BGE and PHI which are the four business units through which Exelon generates its revenue from and each has its sphere of utility it operates on. ComEd deals with electricity transmission and distribution operations, PECO consists of electricity transmission and distribution operations and retail natural gas distribution operations while BGE and PHI deals with electricity transmission and distribution operations and retail natural gas distribution operations and electricity transmission and distribution operations respectively.

ComEd’s net income for the second quarter of the year increased to $227 million, PECO’s net income is at $133 million while BGE and PCI are at $133 million and $37 million respectively.
