Ever heard that we are all the best teachers in a way? Well, as true as that could be, it’s cardinal to recognize the efforts of others in our lives. The family is the bedrock of our nation, but there are individuals who aren’t family but have contributed greatly to our success – our teachers.

For the year 2023, we arrived at the end of the long puzzle, and Rebecka Peterson won the melee. Rebecka Peterson, a Tulsa Union High School math teacher was recognized as the national Teacher of the Year at a White House ceremony

Rebecka Peterson is an immigrant of Swedish-Iranian descent who has lived in several counties around the globe, thanks to her parent’s missionary assignments as medics.

Aside from holding a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Oklahoma Wesleyan University, Rebecka equally holds a master’s degree in mathematics from the University of South Dakota.

According to the 2023, best teacher awardee, her middle school math teacher Mrs. West Inspired her to be the best version of herself in her career. In her words, “With her making a space for me, I was able to see it so I did it,” Peterson said, adding, “I grew up in a time where history told [that] us girls don’t have a place in STEM, but because of Mrs. West, I get to be part of the narrative that says history was wrong.”

She taught for three years at the collegiate level and gathered 11 years of experience teaching high school math classes from intermediate algebra to advanced placement calculus at Union High School, Tulsa, Oklahoma. She owns a blog page called the One Good Thing blog which she posts daily to help her appreciate the beauty in her passion, serving as a classroom tutor. Her daily posts on the blog may exceed 1400 posts at the moment.

Now she has won the best teachers award, she intends to explore her new platform to assist other teachers, communicate all the good things that come with being an instructor, and draw countless others into this exceptional profession. All these she intends to do using her experience as a case study.

Rebecka Peterson lives in Tulsa, Oklahoma, with her husband, Brett, and son, Jonas, and she enjoys reading, crafting, and playing board games.
