In the new Kenya Power tokens tariffs, the standard monthly fixed charges were abolished. Hence, Kenyans expected to be paying less for more. However, to some, this was not the case as they were receiving fewer units than before.

KPLC Prepaid Charges Calculations

Before the removal of the electricity fixed charges, the price per unit was lower than the current rate. After these charges were abolished, the cost per token was increased, hence the reason why many Kenyans think they are receiving fewer units than before. Here is the KPLC tokens calculator guide.

KPLC Electricity Tariffs

The following applies to both post-pay or prepaid units purchase according to section 45 of the energy act amendment 2018:

  1. Domestic consumers who purchase less than 10 tokens: Each unit is charged Ksh. 12.00.
  2. Domestic consumers who purchase over 10 units: If you buy more than 10 tokens at a go, then you will be charged Ksh. 15.80 for each.
  3. Small scale consumers for less than 15,000 tokens: Ksh. 15.80 per power unit is applicable
  4. Industrial customer for more than 15,000 units

Commercial consumers supplied three-phase four-wire post-pay 415 volts’ electricity using more than 15,00 pay:

  • Ksh. 12.00 for every token
  • Ksh. 6.00 per unit during off-peak hours
  • Ksh. 800.00 per kVA as a demand charge

The off-peak hours are as follows:

  • Weekdays: From 0000hrs to 0600hrs and from 2200hrs to 0000hrs
  • Saturday or Holidays: 0000hrs to 0800hrs and 1400hrs to 0000hrs
  • Sundays: 0000hrs to 0000hrs

If you don’t fall into the above groups, then you are a post-pay customer, and your billing is different. It includes companies consuming more than 415 voltages.

Other Charges

On top of the above, the following are also deducted when you buy KPLC tokens:

1. Fuel Energy Costs

The following formula is used to calculate KPLC token prices for fuel energy costs. The answer is rounded up to the nearest one cent.

= 1/(1-L) x {(∑CiGiSi+ ∑Pim- ∑Pxp+ ∑Pi)/G}x 100

Where:

  • ∑ – The summation symbol
  • Ci – Actual price in Ksh/kg for fuel consumed by plant i, where i can be 1,2,3…. n
  • Gi – Units purchased from a plant, say i, where i = 1,2,3,4 …… n
  • G – Total tokens purchased from KPLC
  • Si – Fuel consumption in kg/token
  • Pim – Fuel costs for imported entities
  • Pxp – Fuel costs for exported units
  • Pi – The sum of fuel charges based on power purchased on a certain plant.

The commission publishes monthly notices in the Kenya Gazette showing all the above rates for fuel energy costs. You should use the figures to ascertain how much you will pay for the month of publication of such notice.

2. Foreign Exchange Rate Fluctuation Adjustment (FERFA)

All the units you purchase are liable for this charge. The commission publishes monthly notices in the Kenya Gazette showing how much FERFA you will pay for all the units billed on a prepaid basis. You should obtain this figure to ascertain what will be needed of you.

3. Inflation Adjustment (INFA)

This charge is automatically deducted at the end of every six months starting from July 1st.

KPLC token prices for INFA is calculated using the following formula:

INFAi=1/(1-L) x((INFAkenGen+ INFAipp+INFAkplc)/Gp)x 100

Where:

  • INFAi – The total Inflation adjustment per unit for a specific half a year
  • L – The loss factor in transmission equal to 14.9%
  • Gp -The total units purchased during the half a year
  • INFAkenGen – The Specific Adjustment relating to KenGen, contracted plants
  • INFAipp – The Specific Inflation Adjustment in 6 months’ period
  • INFAkplc – Applies to the company’s costs related to transmissions, maintenance and distribution.

The commission publishes these rates in the Kenya Gazette in the first month of every half a year.

4. Security Support Facility (SSF)

The commission publishes all the applicable SSF fees in the Kenya Gazette every month. The amount is collected by KPLC and remitted to Lake Turkana Wind Power Limited under their Power Purchase Agreement.

5. Water Levy

All units you purchase are liable to the Water Resource Management Authority(WRMA) levy for water used by power plants to generate electricity. The commission publishes a notice every month in the Kenya Gazette stating how much WRMA charge you will pay for every unit.

6. Tax

Taxes are deducted as directed by the government. 16% VAT is charged for:

  • Demand charge
  • Foreign Exchange Fluctuation Adjustment
  • Inflation adjustment
  • Non-fuel energy cost
  • Fuel energy cost

Rural Electrification Programme (REP) charge 5% for revenue from Unit Sales. Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) 3cents per Kilo Watt Hour (kWh).

Calculations

To calculate the total kWh(s) you will get, you need to check all the respective rates from the Kenya Gazette or KPLC website, use the necessary formulas for calculation. You should then deduct them to get the token amount.

The next step should be evaluating which category your token amount falls in. If it can only purchase less than 10 units, you will pay Ksh. 12.00 per kWh. For over 10 kWh you will pay Ksh. 15.80 for each token.

Assuming your units’ amount is Ksh. 100 for a specific KPLC Tokens recharge, then you will be charged Ksh. 12.00 for every token. Hence the following will apply:

(Ksh.100)/(Ksh.12.00/KWh)=8.333333 ≃8.34 units

  2. Choose your preferred line: The step only applies to users with a dual-SIM gadget.
  3. Select “M-PESA”: This is usually the second option on the Window.
  4. Press “Lipa na M-PESA”: You will see this option on the next screen.

How To Check KPLC Token Balance Online

You can check your KPLC balance via the following simple steps and methods regardless of your location. You will need:

  • Smartphone/laptop/desktop
  • Internet connection
  • Telegram or an email account
Method A: E-bill System

E-bill is an email-linked system that you can use to check your units’ balance. The following steps should be used:

  1. Connect to the web: Use public Wi-Fis, data bundles, or Bluetooth tethering
  2. Go to your email host.
  3. Log in or create an account: Follow the prompts. You should enter the correct credentials.
  4. Compose a new message.
  5. Enter the recipient address: use bill@kplc.co.ke.
