How To Enroll Your Child In Kindergarten School In Ontario 2024

It might not be quite necessary but I thought you should know the Child Care rights in Ontario like the right to attend school.

Right To Attend School

School boards are required to admit students, without the payment of a fee, who are qualified to be resident pupils of the board, as defined in the Education Act. Among other things, a student must live within the jurisdiction of a board in order to be a resident pupil. Various other requirements apply to determine the type of board that a student is entitled to enroll in (i.e. English-language, French-language, public, separate).

A child has the right to attend Junior Kindergarten on September 1 the calendar year in which the child turns 4 years old. This means that a child can attend at the minimum age of 3 years and 8 months.

A child has the right to attend Kindergarten on September 1 in the calendar year in which the child turns 5 years old. This means that a child can attend at the minimum age of 4 years and 8 months.

A child may begin attending Junior Kindergarten or Kindergarten at any time during the school year with registration and proper documentation.

If at any point during the school year, a parent chooses to transition his or her child from part-time to full-time attendance in Kindergarten, the child has the right to attend full-time.

The Education Act is the Constitution that governs public schools in Ontario. It has it that children aged 6-18 must attend school. For more information, you could visit the Education Act.

Age Requirements For Registration

In accordance with the Education Act, to enroll, your child has to meet the following age requirements;

  • For Junior Kindergarten, the child must be 4 years old by December 31 of the current year
  • For Senior Kindergarten, your child must be 5 years old by December 31 of the current year

While most School prefers online registration, there are quite a handful of schools that still allow parents the liberty of visiting the schools for virtual registration.

  • Use the school locator tool to find schools indicated as the home school in your region, district, or area.
  • Create a parent account or log in to your existing account if you have one.
  • Be sure to select the 2023-2024 school year once your parent’s accounts are created or once you’re logged in.
