The Echidna Global Scholars Program aims to strengthen the capacity of local leaders to drive evidence-based change in girls’ education in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) around the world.

During a six-month Fellowship at Brookings, the Scholars pursue individual research focused on improving learning opportunities and life outcomes for girls and young women in LMICs, develop their leadership and evidence literacy skills, build substantive knowledge on gender and global education issues, and expand their impact competencies and pathways.

Upon completion of the Fellowship, the Scholars transition to the Echidna Alumni Network, where they continue to receive guidance and support to promote their significant, sustained, and collective influence on girls’ education in LMICs and on the broader global girls’ education ecosystem. Since its inception in 2012, the Echidna Global Scholars Program has hosted ten cohorts of fellows and serves an alumni network of 35 scholars from 20 different countries.

Benefits

  • Applicants selected for the Fellowship will receive a stipend totaling $22,500 USD to support living costs during the pre-residency and residency periods (subject to U.S. tax withholding and reporting).
  • In addition, the Center for Universal Education (CUE) will cover the costs associated with the visa process, single-occupancy housing for the three-and-a-half-month residency period, round-trip travel expenses, and a limited health insurance plan.

Eligibility

  • Open to leaders in girls’ education from low- and middle-income countries throughout the Global South.
  • Applicants should have a background in education, development, public policy, economics, or a related area, with a minimum of 10 years of professional experience in research/academia, non-governmental, community or civil society organizations, or government.
  • A Master’s degree is required.
  • Candidates with experience in both academic or government settings and community organizations are especially encouraged to apply.

The Program selects professionals with substantial experience in and ties to low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), a clear intent to return to an LMIC after completing the period of residency at Brookings, and a passion and demonstrated commitment to improving learning opportunities and life outcomes for girls and young women in and through education.
