About Teaching Assistance Program In France

The Teaching Assistance Program In France (TAPIF) is a program run by the French Ministry of Education and the Cultural Services of The French Embassy that places Americans between 20-35 years of age as assistant English teachers in elementary and secondary schools throughout France.

The program’s goal is to strengthen foreign-language instruction in French schools by establishing a native speaker presence, while also providing young professionals from around the world with initial international teaching experience and first-hand knowledge of French language and culture.

Opportunities Offered By Teaching Assistance Program In France

The Teaching Assistant Program in France offers you the opportunity to work in France for 7 months, teaching English to French students of all ages.

Each year, over 1,500 American citizens and permanent residents teach in public schools across all regions of metropolitan France and in the overseas departments of France such as French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique and Réunion.

The American cohort is part of the larger Assistants de langue en France program, which recruits approximately 4,500 young educators from 60 countries to teach 15 languages annually in France. The Assistants de langue en France program is managed by France Éducation international.

Teaching Assistance Program In France Job Duties

Assistants teach 12 hours per week in up to 3 schools. Classes are conducted in English. Teaching assistants conduct all or part of a class, typically leading conversations in English.

Duties include serving as a resource person in conversation groups, providing small group tutorials, and giving talks related to American studies. Assignments vary depending on the school’s needs and the assistant’s abilities.

Contracts are available at the elementary or secondary school level.

• Elementary School – Children aged 8-11 years old. Assistant leads oral activities with small groups, or works alongside the teacher with the entire class present.

TAPIF offers positions in all regions of metropolitan France and in the overseas departments of French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, and Réunion. Applicants may indicate up to three regions of preference on their application. Accepted applicants receive placement in a specific French Académie (school district) at the time of acceptance notification in April.

Teaching Assistance Program In France Contract Length

You should have it in mind that all teaching contracts last 7 months, from October 1st through April 30th.

Americans may participate a maximum of 2 times in the TAPIF program. If you are applying for an assistantship for a second consecutive year, you will need to apply to renew your contract through France Éducation international.

Renewal is contingent upon a positive review from the host institution, whether or not the assistant wishes to remain at his or her host institution or be transferred to another school or académie, amongst other factors.

If you are applying for a second assistantship in non-consecutive years (ex. You were an assistant in 2018-2019 and now you are applying again for 2023-2024) you must apply through the general TAPIF application at tapif.org.

In this situation, we review applications with the same criteria as first-time assistants; however we systematically place former assistants who are accepted on the waiting list.

If you submitted an application within the past four years, we can use your previous application for 2023-2024.

Teaching Assistance Program In France Stipend

€976.49 per month GROSS, approximately €785 per month NET (slight variations possible due to region-dependent local deductions).

Due to the higher cost of living in the overseas departments, assistants in French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique and Réunion receive an additional salary allowance of approximately 30% to 35%.

The stipend provides enough money to live the lifestyle of a typical French student in most regions of France (but NOT Paris due to the very high cost of living in the capital region).

No additional support is provided for travel to France or for dependents. Personal funds are needed for the initial period of the contract.

Teaching Assistance Program In France Health Insurance

Assistants receive health insurance through the French national healthcare system known as the Sécurité sociale. The “Sécu” covers 70% of medical costs, 35-65% of prescriptions, and 80% of hospitalization fees in France. The plan does NOT cover the costs of travel outside of France, returning to the U.S. for medical treatment, or repatriation of remains.

Assistants are strongly encouraged to purchase travel health insurance or an international student/youth card that will cover medical expenses for emergencies that happen outside of France.

This additional coverage also helps assistants pay for out-of-pocket medical costs during the initial period of the grant (first 2-3 months), during which time they must complete the Sécu enrollment paperwork (co-pays and immediate reimbursements for medical services do not take effect until the enrollment paperwork is complete).

Assistant coverage technically begins on October 1st, but assistants must pay out-of-pocket until they receive their permanent social security number, at which time they can be retroactively reimbursed. Additional individual coverage is not required, but is still highly recommended.

Teaching Assistance Program In France Housing

Assistants are responsible for making their own living arrangements. Some host schools are able to help assistants secure housing or make arrangements for the first few weeks in France, but this is NOT guaranteed.

Assistants should plan on needing to find their own housing. France Éducation international, the Embassy, and the school districts in France do offer a number of resources and suggestions during the summer on how and where search for housing.

Teaching Assistance Program In France Eligibility

1. CITIZENSHIP

Candidates must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States. Foreign nationals with a U.S. Green Card may only apply if they are citizens of one of these countries.

2. AGE

Candidates must be between 20 and 35 years old on the start date of the program.

The grant’s age limit is strict and we cannot make exceptions. We do not offer any similar programs for people not meeting the TAPIF eligibility requirements.

3. EDUCATION

Candidates must have completed at least 3 years of higher (post-secondary) education by the start date of the program. Years of community college studies can count towards this requirement. Candidates must have also completed the majority of their primary and secondary school studies in the U. S.

4. ENGLISH LANGUAGE / BACKGROUND

Candidates must be native speakers of English and must have completed the majority of their elementary, secondary, and university studies in the United States.

5. FRENCH LANGUAGE SKILLS

Proficiency in French is required (minimum B1 level on Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). French majors and minors are encouraged to apply. Candidates without a French major or minor may apply if they have developed at least a basic proficiency in French (equivalent to 3 semesters of college French) and/or lived abroad in a Francophone country.

Language skills are essential to facilitating work in the classroom and integrating into a new community. A personal statement in French and letters of recommendation attesting to the applicant’s French skills, attitude, and work ethic are required.

6. OTHER

The selection process favors applicants who have prior experience teaching or working with children, adolescents, and/or adults. This is not required, but all applicants should demonstrate at least an interest in education.

Candidates must possess the skills to promote cultural understanding between France and the United States. Prior experience living, working, and/or travelling abroad is helpful in demonstrating this ability and an appreciation of other cultures.

Fall – Winter

The Candidate prepares and submits the TAPIF online application. Applications available in mid-October every year on tapif.org.

Month of April

Notification of selection is sent out by e-mail.

Late April-Month of May

Waitlisted candidates are contacted with an employment offer if and when positions become available.

May – August

French school district (Académie) prepares assistant’s work contract (referred to as an “arrêté de nomination). As opposed to year’s past, the assistant work contract also acts as an automatic work authorization. It no longer needs to be stamped by the French Labor Authority.

June – August

Académie mails work contract to assistant. Work contract specifies assistant’s exact placement within the Académie. Upon receiving contract, assistant contacts school/contact person for practical information.

August – September

Assistant obtains a long-stay work visa from regional French consulate in the U.S.

Please note that work visas for assistants take between 1 and 3 weeks to be issued. Assistants must apply for their visas IN PERSON at one of the VFS Centers that facilitates French visas for Americans.  Assistants should plan on being in the U.S. during the entire month of August and up through late September to allow enough time to complete the necessary visa and work contract paperwork.

Mid – to late September

Assistant leaves for France only after securing his or her long-stay work visa.

October 1

Start date of contract. Assistant is expected to report to his or her school(s) and/or contact person on this date.

October

Assistant attends orientation session(s) organized by Académie at which time Académie provides logistical and pedagogical information.

Assistant begins teaching.
