South African Govt Releases Proposed 2024 School Calendar for Public Comment

The Department of Basic Education has now released the proposed calendar for the 2024 school year. The 2024 school year will be made up of 43 weeks.

We are now being given a look into what the 2024 school year might look like as the Department of Basic Education (DBE) revealed the proposed school calendar for 2024.

This school calendar only applies to all public schools throughout the country.

According to the calendar, learners will have a total of 199 days of school attendance, making the school year consist of 43 weeks.

Learners are set to start their academic year on 17 January and the year will then run until 13 December. Terms are arranged as follows:

  • Term 1: 17 January to 27 March
  • Term 2: 9 April to 28 June
  • Term 3: 23 July to 4 October
  • Term 4: 15 October to 13 December

For the 2023 school year, inland provinces are set to start their academic year from 11 January to 13 December and 18 January to 13 December for learners in coastal provinces.

The 2023 school year will be made up of 199 school days and consist of 43 weeks.

The department has invited South Africans to comment on the proposed 2024 School Calendar, by sending an email to either Mlambo.S@dbe.gov.za or Manaka.L@dbe.gov.za. The comments must reach the department by no later than 18 April 2022.
