The Catholic-sponsored facility first began as a primary boarding school for boys and has grown to become one of the best schools in the Mount Kenya region and the country at large. According to the Principal, Mr. Maina J. Consolata Missionaries established the institution in 1924, at a time when only a handful of schools in the country were open for African learners. Later on, in 1947, the institution was upgraded to a Janitor Secondary School. The main contributor to this move was the rising number of Kenyans who longed for improved education standards in both primary and secondary schools.

It was until 1954 when the facility finally earned the status of a full secondary school. With the leadership of Rev. Fr. Lionel, the first lot of “O” level students sat for their national examination a year later. Throughout this period, the demand for improved learning facilities kept rising. As a result, the institution introduced the A-level so as to expand its reach. For decades, Nyeri High School’s performance has always been exemplary.
