Who Issues Passports In Tanzania?

The responsibility of issuing passports is bestowed on the Immigration Department, which operates under the Foreign Affairs Ministry. It is this department that has the mandate of facilitating and controlling the movement of people as provided by Tanzanian Immigration regulations. To this effect, it is tasked with issuing passports to all eligible Tanzanian citizens.

The department’s work doesn’t stop at issuing passports. If you need any other documentation that will facilitate your travel, as required by Tanzanian citizens and other eligible individuals, this is where you will file your application. These include:

  • Visas
  • Residence permits
  • Any other necessary citizenship documents

All these services can be accessed at the department of immigration offices located across Tanzania. However, citizens living abroad can access the services at various Tanzanian embassies, high commissions, and consulates around the world.

Types Of Passports Issued In Tanzania

The department of immigration issues various types of passports to Tanzanian citizens. These include:

1. Ordinary Passport

The ordinary passport is the most common passport issued by the Tanzanian government. It can be issued to any citizen of the republic to travel outside the country.

2. Service Passport

The service passport is a special type of passport issued by the department of immigration. It is usually issued to citizens of the Republic of Tanzania who are in public service.

3. Diplomatic Passport

This is another type of special passport issued to Tanzanian citizens. The honour of holding the passport is bestowed to the people working in the diplomatic corps of the Tanzanian government.

4. The East African Passport

The East African Passport is a travel document that was introduced in East Africa to facilitate easier movement in the region. Tanzanian citizens, being members of the East African community are eligible for the document. However, it can only be used to travel within the region; it is not valid in other countries outside East Africa.
