How To Win Nigeria Spelling Bee Competition In 2023
The Nigerian Spelling Bee competition came into existence following the United States spelling bee which was first recorded in the early 1800s, with other countries like South Africa, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, Kenya, Botswana, and others involved too.
The spelling bee was held in schools and communities, and the aim was to reduce the alarming rate of illiteracy and help students learn to spell, quickly under pressure.
For any candidate to enroll in the spelling bee competition, they have knowledge of a wide range of words, and the game gets tougher as any candidate proceeds up the ladder.
Who Organizes The Nigeria Spelling Bee?
The Federal Ministry of Education endorses Nigeria’s Spelling Bee Competition which is usually organized by the Bee Spelling Competition Initiative, after which students from all over the 36 states of the federation are invited to participate on an annual basis.
The winner of the spelling bee competition is awarded a ridiculous sum of 1,000,000 nairas and an opportunity to represent Nigeria at the African and international levels.
Nevertheless, with all the glory the competition has to offer to its winner, you should understand that for any candidate to win this competition, the price must equal the prize.
How Do You Win The Nigeria Spelling Bee Competition?
1. Preparation
Your level of preparation determines if you are ready to win. You should know that according to Akeelah, “there are thousands of words you do not know,” this knowledge should be your propelling force to put in your best.
Equally, there will be tons of other smart kids competing too, and they too have plans of winning, so you are up against hundreds of competitors, with an odds of 1:1000. So, get materials, books, watch movies, and play word games like never before.
2. Familiarize Yourself With Different Words
As I wrote earlier, there will be lots of words you will only hear for the first time if you do not prepare appropriately. Listen to how the words are spelled, and pronounced, and try to imitate and spell them accordingly.
Train yourself to spell any new words you hear without looking up the spelling in the dictionary. You can use tools like Bee Naija, and many other spelling words tools.
3. Get Enough Rest
Have enough rest before the day of the competition and on that day eats well, good food and sleep is essential if you must win.
Get yourself together, it’s okay to feel nervous on that day, but be careful you do not end up forgetting everything due to pressure and the number of faces you will see.
Do not rush your answers, this isn’t your school’s exam. Take a breath, and be sure each sound has been recorded in your mind before you begin spelling, especially for words you will be hearing for the first time because believe me, you will hear some words for the first time that day.
In conclusion, believe in yourself that you can make it, this is the first step to winning.
