The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) is a state Corporation under the Ministry of Health entrusted with the role of training of the various health disciplines in the health sector, to serve the local, regional and international markets. The College aligns its strategies to those of the health sector, which in turn draws its focus from the national Agenda.

Kenya Medical Training College Courses

KMTC currently offers more than 50 courses at certificate, diploma and post basic diploma levels.

KMTC Certificate Courses

KMTC courses are categorised depending on the departments they fall under. The following is a list of all KMTC certificate courses and their respective admission requirements.

1. Certificate In Community Health Assistants

When you enrol for the Certificate in Community Health Assistants, you will learn how to provide health education, promote access to health services and advocacy, and support healthcare delivery in communities. The minimum KMTC intake requirements for the course are:

  • KSCE mean grade of C-
  • D+ in English or Kiswahili
  • D+ in Biology or Biological Sciences

You also qualify for the programme if you obtained a D (plain) in Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, or Physical Sciences. The course is available at all KMTC campuses for two years.

2. Certificate In Community Health Nursing

The Certificate in Community Health Nursing trains you to participate in and promote health activities within a community in a professional capacity. At the end of the course, you will have enough training to become a community nurse. You must have at least the following qualifications to enrol:

  • KCSE mean grade of C-
  • C- in English or Kiswahili
  • C- Biology/Biological Sciences

Additionally, you must also have obtained a D+ in any one of the following KSCE subjects: Chemistry, Physics/Physical Science, and Mathematics. The study duration is two and a half years. You can enrol for the course at any of the 71 KMTC campuses in Kenya.

3. Certificate In Environmental Health Sciences

The Certificate in Environmental Health Science is a Public Health Technician Course. It is a programme that trains you on how to identify and analyse environments and hazardous agents.

At the end of your training, you will have enough knowledge on how to limit exposures to toxic biological, chemical, and physical agents in elements that affect people’s health. The minimum KMTC certificate courses qualifications for the programme are:

  • KSCE mean grade of C-
  • C- in English or Kiswahili
  • D+ in Biology or Biological Sciences and
  • D (plain) in Mathematics

Students who also obtained a D (plain) in Agriculture, Building Construction, Chemistry, Electricity and Wood Work, Home Science, Physics, and Technical Drawing at KCSE can also apply for the course. The study duration is two years.

4. Certificate In Health Promotion For The Deaf (CHPD)

The Certificate in Health Promotion for the Deaf (CHPD) is one of the many medical courses with D+ in Kenya. KMTC created the programme for deaf students only. Students that want to work in specific health promotion roles and those that want to develop more knowledge and skills to add to their current roles can enrol for the course. You need at least the following to qualify:

  • KCSE mean grade of D+
  • D+ in English or Kenya Sign Language
  • D (Plain) in Biology

You also need to have obtained a D (plain) in Agriculture, Chemistry, General Science or Mathematics. The course is available at all KMTC campuses for a study period of two years.

5. Certificate In Health Records And Information Technology

If you are a fresh high school graduate, you can enrol for a Certificate in Health Records and Information Technology at KMTC. It is a course that prepares you to become a medical record and health information technician responsible for ensuring the safety of patient’s records and keeping them updated. The minimum entry requirements are:

  • KSCE mean grade of C-
  • C- in English or Kiswahili
  • D in Biology/ Biological Sciences.

You also need to have obtained a D- in Mathematics and D+ in any one of the following subjects at KCSE level: Agriculture, Chemistry, Commerce and Business Studies, Computer Studies, Economics, General Science, Geography, Home Science, and Physics, Physical Science. The course duration is two years.

6. Certificate In Health Records And Information Technology (In-Service Category)

Unlike the certificate course mentioned in section five above, the in-service category targets individuals who are already working in a recognised records department but do not have the necessary professional qualifications. The entry requirements are:

  • A minimum of KCSE mean grade of D+, with D+ in English or Kiswahili, and D- in Mathematics
  • Two years of working experience in a recognised Health Records and Information Department
  • A letter of recommendation from a Health Records and Information Officer of the department
  • An appointment letter to your current position

The course duration is two years, and KMTC offers evening classes in Nairobi Campus.

7. Certificate In Medical Engineering

A Certificate in Medical Engineering is one of the many KMTC courses that provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to install, service, and repair hospital systems and medical equipment. Like any other KMTC courses and qualifications, you need at least the following grades to apply.

  • KSCE mean grade of C-
  • C- In English or Kiswahili
  • D (plain) in Mathematics
  • D (plain) in Physics or Physical Sciences, and Chemistry

You can also qualify for the course if you obtained a D (plain) in Biology, Biological Science, Chemistry, Electricity, Metal Work, or Technical Drawing. The duration of the programme is two years.

8. Certificate In Nutrition And Dietetics

As a student, you can enrol for the Certificate in Nutrition and Dietetics to prepare yourself to become a nutritionist or dietician. Throughout the course, you will learn how to tackle all aspects of a proper diet, health, weight management, and more. The minimum entry requirements are:

  • KSCE mean grade of D+
  • D+ in English or Kiswahili
  • D+ Biology or Biological Sciences

You also need to have a D (plain) in Chemistry or Physical Science and a D (plain) in any one of the following cluster subjects: Agriculture, General Science, Home Science, Mathematics, and Physics. The study duration is two years at all KMTC campuses.

9. Certificate In Orthopaedic Trauma Medicine

Orthopaedic Trauma Medicine is one of the many medical courses in Kenya. KMTC allows you to do this course at a certificate level. The course will equip you will the knowledge and skills to diagnose and treat an array of conditions of a human’s musculoskeletal system. You need the following minimum KCSE qualifications to enrol.

  • KSCE mean grade C-
  • C- In English or Kiswahili
  • D+ in Biology or Biological Sciences

You can also enrol for the certificate course if you obtained a D+ in Agriculture, Chemistry, Home Science, Mathematics, Metalwork, Physics, Physical Science, Technical Drawing, and Woodwork. The programme’s duration is two years.

10. Short Certificate Courses

Does KMTC Offer Certificate In Nursing?

Under KMTC’s Department of Nursing, students can enrol for Certificate, Diploma (Pre-service and Upgrading), and Higher Diploma programmes. One of its certificate courses is Enrolled Community Health Nursing.

It is a course available at selected campuses with a study period of two years. To qualify, you must have obtained a KSCE mean grade of C-, with C- in English or Kiswahili, Biology, or Biological Sciences. A D+ in the subjects of Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, or Physical Science is also applicable.

Intakes

KMTC offers two intakes every year for all its courses – September and March. If you are a successful candidate, you will have the opportunity to do any of the above certificate programmes.
